A Chilean judge found eighteen members of a drug trafficking group known as “Los Gaete” guilty of various crimes, La Tercera in Chile reports. The 18 members were sentenced for drug trafficking, money laundering, and illegal possession of weapons. As this news report shows, the group was fairly sophisticated and seemed to be involved in both local and international trafficking. Chilean trafficking represents a small portion of the international rings but the local market is growing. Traffickers from other countries also often seek refuge in Chile where they can live anonymously.
