Chile’s police seized 137 kilos of Bolivian-produced base, a product refined to make cocaine, from a gang in the city of Rancagua, close to Santiago.
Police said that the base could have been used to produce 400 kilos of cocaine, with a street value of three billion pesos ($6.5 million), and that the drug was intended for distribution in the capital and the south of the country.
The seizure was the result of six months of investigative work. Police arrested two individuals and seized a rifle, a pistol, a number of vehicles, and 3.5 million Chilean pesos ($7,600).
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ranks Chile as a country with high cocaine use, with an annual prevalence of some 2.4 percent of the adult population consuming the drug.
