In less than a week Costa Rica’s Police confiscated 938 kilos of cocaine, which is about a tenth of the country’s total seizures in 2010.
The first find took place on Wednesday May 18 when 378 kilos of the drug were discovered in a truck near Miramar, Provincia de Puntarenas.
The following Monday, 560 kilos of cocaine were found at a police checkpoint near Cuajiniquil de la Cruz, Guanacaste, in a vehicle driving toward the Nicaraguan border, EFE reports.
Two people were arrested in connection with the seizures.
In 2002 cocaine seizures in Costa Rica came to less than three tons, according to the LA Times, but by 2010 this had risen to almost 10 tons. The Costa Rican government has called for regional cooperation to fight the problem of drug trafficking.
