President Funes recently declared that gangs fighting over retail drug sales, or “narcomenudeo,” was one of the leading causes of homicide in El Salvador.

Civil police chief Carlos Ascencio highlighted the need for more forces in the province of Sonsonate, which is currently the country’s most violent region.
