Peru’s police found 113 kilos of cocaine hidden inside a fake torpedo attached to the bottom of a boat in a Lima port.
Divers from the Anti-Drugs Squad (Dirandro) discovered the load 20 meters below the surface in the port of Callao.
Interior Minister Miguel Hidalgo said that the device was “an ingenious method, almost unheard of, in drug trafficking.” The compartment which contained the drugs was concealed with cement, and a large clamp attached it to the hull of the boat, making it virtually undetectable in routine searches.
The object was made to look like a torpedo, about 2.5 meters long and 50 cms in diameter. (See video below.)
According to reports the boat was going to go to Europe. Three Peruvian men were arrested on drug trafficking charges in connection with the seizure.
The narco-torpedo joins the narco-submarine as one of the latest innovations in maritime drug trafficking.
